John Deere 4045 Engine Specifications
When you think John Deere you think of tractors and by definition the famed John Deere diesel engines. One of the most popular and familiar diesel engines in the John Deere fleet is the famed PowerTech John Deere 4045 engine. But how did John Deere get it start from making plows to producing world class diesel engines? This article will explain the beginnings of the John Deere Corporation and the technical specifications of John Deere 4045 diesel engines.
John Deere History
The John Deere Corporation began in 1837 from humble beginnings in Grand Detour, Illinois when founder, John Deere, spotted an opportunity one fine afternoon while working in his blacksmith shop. While forging a steel blade for a local sawmill Deere’s mighty swing of the hammer accidentally fractured the blade into two pieces sending the protrusion flying. The jagged steel scrap barley missed Deere and landed face up in the dirt. Deere, counting his lucky stars, bent over to pick up the piece of metal and was struck with a life changing idea. The piece of steel resembled an upside down U shape which Deere associated with equipment that plows of his time frequently were made out of. However, the blades plows of his time were more angular versus concave. One problem with the angular design of cast-iron plows was that soil would stick to the blade and had to be cleaned off manually before going back to work. This cleaning process had to be repeated hundreds of times per work day thus interrupting the work day of the farmer. Deere put his idea of a slight U shaped moldboard into practice and fashioned a plow blade out of the second-hand steel blade that nearly killed him. The design worked perfectly as the soil easily slid off of the steel material where before it would stick to the cast iron. The rest is history and John Deere set out to design and sell farming equipment which later would lead the company down the path of producing diesel engines for their tractors. Today the most popular diesel engine John Deere produces is the 4045 diesel engine.
John Deere 4045 Models
The John Deere PowerTech 4045 comes in four basic models. The John Deere 4045 PowerTech Engine are 4.5 L and are designed for less taxing smaller industrial applications. The John Deere 4045 PowerTech M model is designed with 2-valve heads, static turbos and more reliable mechanical fuel systems. The mechanical controls are designed with ease of use in mind and are simple to maintain and operate. The Remanufactured John Deere 4045 engine PowerTech standard model builds upon previous 4 cylinder engine models with the new electronically controlled fuel system incorporated into the ECM. The John Deere 4045 PWX model is an upgrade in the emissions department and features some of the best emissions and exhaust DPF technology. The emissions control technology is coupled with wastegated turbocharging to produce a more precise chemical reaction during ignition to create a quick response of peak torque during sub-optimal operating conditions. The PWX also has an upgrade in the design to the 4-valve cylinder heads to provide increased airflow for optimal low-speed torque. The last John Deere 4045 PowerTech engine is known as the PVX which uses variable geometry turbocharging to improve combustion efficiency ratios which in-turns increases efficiency, reduces emission particulates and increases the overall fuel consumption.
Each sub model of the John Deere 4045 is a little bit different however in general the base model’s operating specifications are stated below:
